Exercise has emerged as a primary treatment for insomnia, with activities such as Tai Chi, yoga, and jogging showing promise in alleviating symptoms of sleep disorders. Understanding the Link Between Exercise and Insomnia

Insomnia is not only a common sleep disorder but is also linked to serious health issues such as dementia and cardiovascular disease. Prevalence rates of insomnia vary significantly, ranging from 4% to 22%. The review analyzed 24 studies involving 2045 adults aged at least 60 years, with the average age of participants being 70. The studies examined different exercise modalities, including aerobic, mixed, and muscle-strengthening exercises, providing evidence of their effectiveness in treating insomnia.

Types of Exercise and Their Impact

Seven exercise-based treatments were identified that could potentially ease insomnia symptoms. These included yoga, Tai Chi, walking, and jogging. Each exercise demonstrated its unique benefits in improving sleep quality. Tai Chi, for instance, reduced poor sleep quality by over four points, increased total sleep time by over 50 minutes, reduced awake time after falling asleep by over 30 minutes, and shortened sleep latency by around 25 minutes.

Research suggests that walking or jogging can reduce insomnia severity by nearly 10 points and enhance the secretion of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep-wake cycles.

Structure and Duration of Exercise Programs

The exercise programs assessed in the review varied in length, ranging from four to 26 weeks, with an average duration of 14 weeks. Sessions typically lasted over 50 minutes and were conducted two to three times a week. This structured approach ensures that participants gain substantial benefits from their exercise routines, contributing to improved sleep quality and reduced insomnia symptoms.

Geographical and Demographic Insights

Of the studies included in the analysis, 56% were conducted in Asia, indicating a significant concentration of research in this region. The 22 randomized clinical trials involved 1348 participants, providing a robust dataset for analyzing the effects of exercise on insomnia. Validated scoring systems were used to assess the outcomes, ensuring the reliability and accuracy of the findings.
