Summit County Launches Mental Health Needs Survey

Summit County has initiated a mental health survey that will remain open until February 7. This survey, available in both English and Spanish, seeks to gather 2,000 responses to better understand and address the mental health needs of the community.

The survey's primary focus this year is on the mental health needs of the Black community, aiming to address the disproportionate mental health diagnoses and high emergency room visits experienced by Black residents.

Current Mental Health Initiatives

Summit County has made significant strides in improving mental health services. The establishment of a Mobile Crisis Outreach Team (MCOT) is one such initiative. MCOTs are designed to handle mental health crisis calls efficiently, providing immediate support to those in need. Additionally, the county has increased the number of Spanish-speaking clinicians to cater to the diverse population, thereby enhancing the accessibility of mental health services.

Community Response and Participation

Currently, 40% of Summit County residents receive mental health care, indicating a substantial engagement with available services. The Mental Wellness Alliance in the county plays a crucial role in reducing the stigma associated with mental health issues, encouraging more individuals to seek help without fear of judgment. The survey's focus on culturally responsive care is supported by an initiative led by Black professionals, which aims to tailor mental health services to better meet the specific needs of the Black community.
